The Bancroft Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a suspected drowning after a canoe capsized on Faraday Lake. The incident occurred on Monday, April 28, shortly after 10:30 a.m., when emergency services responded to reports of the capsized canoe. Two men made it safely to shore, but one occupant was unaccounted for. The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit later located and identified the body of a 19-year-old male from Scarborough. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
With the cold water temperatures adding to the danger, the OPP is reminding everyone to always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) or life jacket when on the water. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
