The Douglas Recreation Committee is all set to host the 50th Frosty Fun winter carnival this weekend and it’s shaping up to be one of the best yet.
The weather has been perfect, and the outdoor rink is in great condition, says Jesse Welch, president of the Douglas Recreation Committee, laying the foundation for a great Frosty Fun Feb. 7-9.
Welch said the event is known to draw some big crowds and he’s grateful to the many people who contribute to its success.
Activities begin Friday night with a men’s hockey tournament that runs all weekend, as well as a Meet the Keepers wildlife show in the gym at St. Michael’s School.
And activities really ramp up on Saturday.
The fun continues the next day, too.
Also on Sunday are games, a euchre tournament, and a hot roast beef dinner to wrap up the event.
Welch said he’s excited to once again see the kids and families out having fun.
Frosty Fun raises about 75 per cent of the operating budget for the year for the Douglas rec complex, he noted.
He’s pleased with the weather forecast, too. Organizers were disappointed with last year’s weather – it was +9 degrees C on the Saturday, cancelling the hockey tournament and affecting several other outdoor events.
The seasonal temps have also allowed for the exciting return of a past carnival feature – an extra skating surface.
To mark the 50th event, festivities kicked off the weekend before with a euchre tournament and wing night and live music, both events were extremely well-attended.
