Renfrew Pride is celebrating a huge win for inclusivity that’s been years in the making.
Co-Founder Chris Kyte has announced that their rainbow crosswalk project has been finished, wrapping up a wishlist item that they first got approval for during the previous council term.
Kelly Latendresse, Renfrew’s Director of Community and Recreation Services, tells us more about the vibrant new addition to your trip through downtown.
The concept for a pride crosswalk in Renfrew has gone through a number of revisions over the past few years due to the desire to incorporate the updated Progress Pride flag into the design and concerns about possible vandalism.
However, Latendresse says Renfrew Pride decided on the original Pride colours for the installation due to the available funding.
The project was completely funded by Renfrew Pride and ally group Pflag Renfrew County, who will also be responsible for future upkeep.
Renfrew Mayor Tom Sidney says that “the rainbow crosswalk represents more than just paint on pavement; it symbolizes our community and the Council’s dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.”
He adds that the town is “incredibly grateful for the support and financial contribution from our partners at Renfrew PRIDE, who have brought this project to fruition. And while we recognize that we still have work to do as a community, this is another great step in that direction.”
