Our local OPP detachment says even if it ends up being cloudy the afternoon of Monday April 8th, using your headlights while driving during the eclipse period is what you should be doing.
If you’re driving to reach an eclipse event or destination, Acting Sergeant Brianna Roberge cautions you to remember everyone else may have that same idea; allow extra time, there will be more traffic than normal.
As the next full Solar Eclipse is not for another 80 years, no one wants this once-in-a-lifetime event to be life-ending… due to lack of caution or distraction.
Roberge says there are four safety aspects to bear in mind: for your vehicle, its headlights; for yourself, keep your eyes on the road; for proper safety- don’t pull off to the side; for others, watch out for pedestrians.
The Acting Sergeant says those planning to attend an eclipse event should not make it a last-minute decision; listen ahead to local radio to find out what’s planned in your area.
The numbers of police on the highways April 8th will be greatest along the path of totality.
Roberge says officers too, must take proper precautions.
The Acting Sergeant says it’s a case of common sense, and cooperation.
