The Renfrew Curling Rink is ringing in 150 years with a special event this weekend.
Their 150th Anniversary Bonspiel kicks off Friday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m., with curling, games, food, and plenty of festivities around the ice pad, with the action starting up again on Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Club President Gert Brydges tells myFM that the two-day event gives them a chance to promote their club and grow the sport locally.
They were holding registration in the lead-up to the event, and while more teams showing up at the last minute would not be ideal for the logistics, they won’t actively be turning people away.
Of course, the community is always welcome to drop by and watch the action, take part in the fun and games happening in between the time on the ice, and learn more about the club, which has been a Renfrew staple since 1874.
Brydges credits fellow club member Keith Moss for putting together the Bonspiel, which she also hopes will continue the trend of growth in the Renfrew Curling Rink’s membership in recent years.
She explains that more members means better fundraising efforts, which will go a long way for short-term goals like improving their ice shed and long-term goals like an expansion for their Xavier Street facility.
Brydges adds that the Renfrew Curling Club’s 150th anniversary celebrations will not end with just this event and that more fun at the rink is on the way.
