Renfrew residents have raised over half a million dollars through their annual Terry Fox Runs, and they’ll be adding more this weekend.
Co-organizer Dan Donohue says that registration for the run gets started inside the Ma-te-Way Activity Centre at 10:00am on Sunday, September 17th, with some special guests joining the public for a warm-up session ahead of the run getting underway.
Donohue adds that donations can also be dropped off ahead of the run at 11:00am, which will see runners, walkers, and rollers take head up the Millennium Trail on 2k, 5k, and 10k treks in support of cancer research.
While he and fellow organizer Patti Leclaire are hoping for good running weather this weekend, Donohue says to keep both the forecast and some ongoing road work in mind when preparing for the day.
Donohue had a hand in putting together the first Terry Fox run in Renfrew and has been an active participant in the nationwide event ever since Terry Fox inspired Canadians with his 143-day run across Canada in 1980.
Terry Fox Runs around the world have raised over $850 million since they began in 1981, with 79 cents of every dollar raised for the Terry Fox Foundation going directly towards funding cancer research.
The Renfrew event has set a goal of $9,000 this year, which is already close to being met ahead of the run taking place. You can contribute by donating through the Terry Fox Foundation website.
