UPDATE: Tornado Watch ended
Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River. The tornado watch issued by Environment Canada is in effect for Fort William, Shawville and the Rapides-des-Joachims area.
Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes this afternoon. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rainfall are also possible.
Environment Canada says this is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.
While Environment Canada has not issued any storm warnings for Renfrew County or the City of Pembroke as of 10:20am, they are calling for showers and a risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon.
Meteorologists with the Northern Tornadoes Project say there is a likely tornado threat for parts of Ontario and Quebec today (June 16th).
In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued, it is recommended you take the following actions:
- Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.
- Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can.
- As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
