The County of Renfrew in eastern Ontario has reached a twinning agreement with Renfrewshire in Scotland. Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet and Chair of the Property and Development Committee for the County of Renfrew, Bob Sweet, tells myFM this is a project dating back to 2019. He says this twinning partnership will create a number of opportunities when it comes to education, tourism and economic development.
Sweet says the County of Renfrew recently celebrated 150-years and with Renfrewshire being over 1,000-years old, he says there’s some catching up to do.
The local mayor talked about similarities Renfrew County and Renfrewshire share. He says many of the local municipalities such were named after town and townships in Renfrewshire. Sweet adds Renfrew, Arnprior, McNab/Braeside and Burnstown all have Scottish roots.
Sweet says this twinning agreement means a lot to him since he grew up “a nine iron away” from Renfrewshire.
Provost Lorraine Cameron from Renfrewshire presented to county council on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022 to officially announce the twinning agreement with Renfrew County. Cameron says this will create economic development opportunities and provide opportunities for businesses and exciting opportunities for education experiences.
Renfrew County Warden Debbie Robinson commented this will be an active partnership.
