The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has provided an update on the expansion of Highway 17 in Renfrew County.
Work is underway to create four lanes of traffic along Highway 17 between Renfrew and Arnprior. The four lane highway will continue from Scheel Drive in McNab/Braeside to 3km west of Bruce Street in Renfrew. MTO representative Darren Waters updated county council this morning on the work that will be completed.
Construction of the Calabogie Road interchange is expected to start this year (2021) and wrap up in 2023. The $25-million job has been awarded to AECON Construction Ontario East.
An overpass will carry traffic along Calabogie Road over Highway 17. The roadway will need to be realigned with on and off ramps and there’s a proposed carpool lot.
The next phase of the work would be building the westbound lanes from Scheel Drive to west of Bruce Street and include interchanges at County Road 6 (Gillan Road/Lochwinnoch Road), O’Brien Road and Bruce Street.
The MTO says they’re starting a pavement resurfacing and culvert holding strategy in 2021 due to risks that the condition of the pavement between Scheel Drive and Bruce Street will not hold up and pot holes will form before the highway expansion is complete.
The MTO is also working with local snowmobile clubs to find ways they can cross the highway once the 4-lane expansion is complete.
