Worried about instances of homelessness going up in concert with evictions across Ontario?
On Tuesday of last week, just before the legislature adjourned for its Holiday break, a private members motion to extend the moratorium was passed by unanimous consent- but there was no debate on the motion, and house sittings won’t resume until February 10th.
Doug Brookes, president of the Renfrew Food Bank speculates that evictions will impact significant portions of the local food bank’s clientele.
Motion 125 had called for reinstating the temporary moratorium on residential evictions until the province has entered a post-pandemic recovery period and prohibiting evictions for non-payment of rent for the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Feed Ontario, the coordinating body for the province’s food banks, is recommending that Premier Ford move quickly to sign an emergency order to implement the eviction moratorium as soon as possible as an urgent temporary measure.
The Feed Ontario website – FeedOntario.ca – includes a form for contacting the Premier.
