Municipalities in Renfrew County are starting to offer relief for local residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon says council has decided to waive all penalties and interest charges that would have been applied to property tax, water and wastewater payments that are due on March 27th. Emon says this will cost the Town of Renfrew about $10,000 per month.
The Renfrew Reeve says they’ve also taken preventative steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 including closing all municipal buildings, libraries and rec centres as mandated by the state of emergency in Ontario. Greater Madawaska Township has also announced they will postpone interest on taxes for the upcoming bill.
The Town of Arnprior, Whitewater Region and City of Pembroke all have special council meetings scheduled this afternoon (March 25th, 2020) to discuss ways they can support local residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
