Renfrew will soon be home to Junior A hockey team. myFM News was on hand for a news conference at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre in Renfrew this afternoon, where it was announced that the Central Canada Hockey League has approved the sale and transfer of the Kanata Lasers Junior A Hockey Club to new owners, who plan to relocate the team to Renfrew for the 2020-21 season. The new team will be known as the Renfrew Wolves. Meanwhile, the existing Renfrew Timberwolves team, which plays in the CCHL tier 2 will be moving to a town nearby. The new owners, Jim Seyers and Ryan Leonard, couldn’t confirm where the Timberwolves will be moving, but with the Whitewater Kings now seeking a move to Petawawa, Cobden would be an ideal location, if Whitewater gets approval to move. CCHL Commissioner Kevin Abrams says “This represents full circle closure of the CCHL’s plan to expand from 10-12 teams and relocate two city based teams to outside markets.” Abrams adds “this has been 12 years in the making after expansion to Kemptville and Carleton Place and relocation of Gloucester to Rockland.” He goes on to say that Renfrew is a vibrant community that will embrace everything that CCHL hockey is about and he looks forward to welcoming them to the world of Junior A hockey. More to come on this story…
