The major flooding this spring that flooded thousands of homes and forced the evacuations of tens of thousands of people will be the topic of conversation at a public meeting in Campbell’s Bay today. The province of Quebec has adopted a draft plan to declare Special Intervention Zones in order to better manage flood prone areas. The law currently prohibits any rebuilding or repairing of homes in flood affected areas. There are exceptions that can be made, but municipalities will have to authorize the work. Repairs to buildings are possible when the damage is estimated at less than half of the original value. The Quebec government wants to hear from people and organizations at public consultations held in 16 regions across the province today. The local meeting is taking place at the Campbell’s Bay Community Centre at 2 Second Street starting at 3:00 pm. Flood victims may also be eligible for the Ministry of Public Safety’s Compensation and Assistance Program for Real and Imminent Disasters. Residents can also send concerns and comments by email. Email comments and concerns about the Special Intervention Zones in Quebec to: zis2019@mamh.gouv. qc.ca.
