The flags at Renfrew County administration buildings have been lowered to half-mast today to recognize the National Day of Mourning, to honour workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or fallen ill due to work-related incidents.
“Today, we pause to honor and remember those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries in the workplace. The National Day of Mourning is a time for reflection and commitment to improving workplace safety for all,” reads a county notice. “Let us stand together in solidarity with the families and communities affected by these tragedies. We pledge to continue working towards safer and healthier work environments, ensuring that everyone returns home safely at the end of the day.”
In 2023, the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC) reported 1,057 workplace fatalities and more than 274,000 time-loss injury claims.
The day was first recognized by the federal government in 1991.
