St. Michael’s Catholic School Ringette
Students across the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) are discovering the excitement of ringette, thanks to a new initiative that brings the fast-paced sport into local schools. With the support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, students are exploring ringette in their school gyms, using brand-new equipment provided for the program.
Ringette, traditionally played on ice, is being adapted for school settings, making it accessible to students of all abilities. The program introduces the basics of the sport, including stick handling, passing, and teamwork, through fun and engaging activities that promote physical activity and inclusion.
“We’re incredibly excited to see the smiles on students’ faces as they try ringette for the first time,” said Damian Solar, Outdoor/Experiential Learning Coordinator. “This program not only promotes physical activity but also fosters a sense of community and inclusion. Thanks to Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, we’ve been able to provide top-quality equipment, ensuring every student has the opportunity to participate.”
Ringette is a sport that focuses on teamwork and skill development, making it ideal for school environments. Its adaptable nature allows students of all skill levels and physical abilities to participate, creating an inclusive atmosphere where everyone can feel valued.
The initiative has received enthusiastic support from students, teachers, and parents. Students are building confidence, learning new skills, and enjoying the fun of team sports. The RCCDSB program not only provides students with a comprehensive introduction to ringette but also aims to spark interest in local ringette associations.
Looking ahead, the board plans to connect students with community teams in the fall of 2025, creating pathways for those interested in pursuing the sport further. The long-term goal is to foster engagement through intramural play, offering a complete and accessible experience for young athletes. This successful partnership highlights the importance of providing inclusive opportunities for youth and shows how community support can make a lasting impact on young lives.
