By all accounts, he was a true leader – on and off the court.
Tributes are pouring in and many memories shared as the community learns of the death of Dave Dobson, a devoted educator, coach, public school board trustee and advocate for public education.
“Dave passed away this past weekend, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to student success,” reads a Renfrew County District School Board press (RCDSB) release.
Born and raised on a dairy farm near Cobden, the Opeongo High School graduate studied at Carleton University and the University of Toronto. Over a 28-year teaching career in Oshawa, Dobson made a lasting impact both in the classroom and on the volleyball court. “His passion for athletics earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious 3M Award for Coaching Excellence in Canada, induction into the Durham College Hall of Fame for founding its volleyball program, and a nomination for the Governor General Award for Teaching Excellence,” reads the release.
Upon returning to the area, Dobson remained deeply involved in his community. He continued to coach volleyball at Opeongo High School, volunteered extensively, and even served as a local bus driver, further exemplifying his dedication to supporting students in every possible way.
He founded the Ottawa Valley Vikings volleyball club, a program that began with a single team and has grown into a thriving organization consisting of 13 teams and 146 athletes.
The Vikings posted to social media, saying Dobson’s loss leaves an immense void in the volleyball community.
“Dave’s passion for volleyball and his influence on people were evident everywhere the sport was played. His presence was felt at every event and his support, guidance and expertise were invaluable to the Ottawa Valley Vikings,” reads the post.
In Dobson’s honour, all flags at RCDSB schools and administrative buildings will be flown at half-mast until further notice.
Service arrangements are expected to be posted on the Fraser-Morris & Heubner Funeral Home website later this week.
“Dave’s legacy will live on in the lives of the students he inspired, the teams he coached, and the educational community he served with such passion and integrity,” said Director of Education Kristen Niemi. “Our thoughts are with all those who knew Dave during this difficult time.”
