Michael Laverty is being remembered as an accomplished Renfrew educator and volunteer.
Laverty, who passed away Feb. 10, was the longest serving principal at St. Joseph’s High School (1982-1997), spending nearly half of his 32 years in education there. He was inducted into the St. Joe’s wall of honour in 1999.
“His involvement and leadership in professional associations, the parish, and the community are well known,” reads his obituary.
He served as chair, secretary and chief negotiator for the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association; eastern region president, provincial director and secondary councillor of the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario; and editor of Shoptalk, Livewires and Principal Connections education newsletters.
Laverty served as both secretary and president of the Renfrew Rotary Club, and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow – the highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow upon a member for outstanding contribution to the community.
“Michael was a former tennis pro in Westmount (Montreal), an avid hiker, camper and gardener. He loved bridge, cribbage and billiards and he was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadians, Montreal Expos, Montreal Alouettes, New York Giants and Notre Dame Fighting Irish,” reads his obituary.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret (Peggy), his children and numerous family members, friends and former colleagues and students.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a date and time to be announced.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Renfrew and District Food Bank, Valley Animal Rescue, Renfrew County Animal Centre SPCA or Riverview Rescues.
