It’s an opportunity to raise funds for an important cause while enjoying the fare at one of Renfrew’s most treasured eateries – Odi’s Kingburger.
The old-school, drive-through burger joint has been a staple for over 50 years with Odi still working away in the back alongside his daughter Robin Audette-Hisko.
A fundraiser this Saturday is supporting a cause near and dear to their hearts – the Angelman Syndrome Foundation of Canada. At the age of 2, Robin’s daughter Ever was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects approximately one in 15,000 live births.
Robin explains how those with Angelman Syndrome are affected.
Symptoms include developmental delay, impaired movement and balance, lack of speech, seizures, feeding and sleep difficulties.
Raising awareness is incredibly important, explains Robin, as early diagnosis is the key to getting services in place more quickly and making the journey smoother.
Robin, her husband Kirk, and their families have been working to get the word out since Ever’s diagnosis and she’s thrilled to see how educated the local community has become. Along with getting involved in Saturday’s event, how can the community help?
There is also always a donation jar at Odi’s Kingburger where the public can give to the cause.
As for this Saturday’s Angelman Awareness Day, Robin tells us that there are a number of things going on.
Along with the draws (and cupcakes!), $2 from every combo will be donated to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation of Canada and Odi’s merch will be 50 per cent off with all proceeds going to the cause.
For those who would like to learn more about Angelman and Ever, who is almost 12 years old now, the family has a YouTube channel.
