Wayne Bennett is the president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 550 Cobden.
If you’ve been to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 550 in Cobden anytime in the last several years, chances are you’ve seen president Wayne Bennett.
A member since 2006, Bennett began his executive role as sports officer and climbed the ranks. He became zone sports officer and now holds the distinction of zone commander, travelling to each of the zone’s branches, in Deep River, Chalk River, Petawawa, Pembroke, Eganville, Cobden Renfrew and Barry’s Bay.
What keeps him at it is his commitment to supporting the area’s veterans and offering a variety of activities for community members.
Bennett says the Legion is the centre of Cobden and more often than not a hub of activity.
Like most service clubs, the Legion struggled during the pandemic and he and a small team made a concerted effort to keep the doors open. Now, rebuilding and coming up with a succession plan is top of mind.
