The Renfrew Lions Club was once one of the largest of its kind across the Ottawa Valley, boasting dozens of service-minded people with a common desire to make the community a better place to live.
While their numbers have eroded in past years, new President James Johnston hopes their latest efforts to recruit will help reestablish the group’s reach and impact.
Johnston, who spent the previous 26 years with the Chalk River Lions Club before taking on the opportunity to lead the way in Renfrew, says their primary goal is to find new opportunities to help the local community through their 8 global causes: childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, the environment, humanitarian concerns, hunger, vision, and supporting youth.
They’ve been active supporters of community pillars like Hospice Renfrew, the Renfrew and District Food Bank, the Sunshine Coach, and other important causes, raising $17,325 in donations for various initiatives in 2023 alone.
Johnston says the local Lions Club is hoping to make a statement later this summer, as they bring the always popular Walk for Guide Dogs to Renfrew.
