If you’re planning to head out onto Muskrat Lake this winter, keep an eye out for an ice ridge that has formed.
Jan. 17, the Muskrat Watershed Council issued an alert regarding the ridge on the southeast end of the lake near Cobden Beach.
Officials explain that ridges can form when the ice shifts due to temperature changes, wind, or water movement, creating raised, uneven mounds of ice that can pose serious hazards.
“Ice around ridges is often unstable and may crack, leading to potential falls through the ice. Snowmobiles and ATVs can easily break through if they hit a thin or cracked area,” reads the notice. “Ice ridges can conceal dangerous cracks or open water beneath the surface, making it hard to detect potential hazards until it’s too late.”
Navigating uneven ice can cause accidents, whether you’re walking, fishing, snowmobiling, ATVing, or skiing.
MWC offered tips on how to stay safe, including:
- Avoid areas with visible ridges. Stick to well-traveled routes where the ice has been tested.
- Check ice thickness before venturing out.
- Stay informed on local ice conditions and weather forecasts.
- Travel with caution and always wear safety gear like a personal flotation device (PFD) or carry ice picks.
- Ride with a buddy and let someone know your route.
“Stay safe and enjoy the beauty of Muskrat Lake but remember safety always comes first when dealing with unpredictable ice conditions!” reads the notice.
