Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party ahead of a national caucus meeting on Wednesday, according to The Globe and Mail.
The prime minister will address Canadians at 10:45 a.m. from outside his home at Rideau Cottage.
Calls for his resignation have increased, as polls show the Liberals trailing behind the Conservatives and the surprise resignation of his Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in mid-December.
Over the Christmas break, members from Ontario, Atlantic, Quebec, and B.C. caucuses expressed their desire for Trudeau to step down.
The caucus meeting on Wednesday is expected to focus on the party’s next steps.
Trudeau has led the Liberals since 2013 and served as Prime Minister since 2015.
