The Renfrew Wolves are signaling a look to the future as they trade away another core piece of their roster.
The Wolves announced on Monday afternoon that captain Joshua Penney has been dealt to the Rockland Nationals in exchange for defensemen Brody Dunbar and Toby Almstead, forwards Carter Downs, Mathieu Fillion, plus future assets.
What does Renfrew give up?
Losing Penney so soon after the Wolves traded away fellow team leader Emmitt Robillard is sure to be a bitter pill for Renfrew fans; the captain has led the team in both points (26) and assists (20) while also playing tough minutes against their opponents top lines.
“I’ve had an incredible experience playing for this amazing organization, supported by a truly outstanding community,” Penney added in the statement. “While this part of the game is never easy, I leave knowing Renfrew has a talented group of young players with top-tier skills and exceptional character. The future is bright, and the fans have so much to look forward to. I want to extend a special thank you to everyone behind the scenes who made my time in Renfrew unforgettable.”
What does Renfrew get back?
Dunbar, a 2008-born, 6’3″ left-handed defenseman, is a first-round CCHL draft pick of Rockland and OHL draft pick of the Flint Firebirds, currently plays for Perth and previously developed with the Ottawa Valley Titans. Known for his imposing physical presence, strong first pass, and heavy shot, Dunbar will be an impactful addition to the Wolves’ blue line.
Almstead, a 2007-born, 5’10” left-handed defenseman, has played at the Junior A level with Rockland this season and currently playing for the Ottawa Jr. Canadians. Developing in the Ottawa Jr. 67s AAA organization, the Wolves say Almstead is a dynamic defenseman poised to become an all-star in the CCHL, adding that his grandparents reside in Renfrew.
Downs, a 2008-born, 5’10” forward drafted in the second round by Rockland, currently plays with the Arnprior Packers in the EOJHL, where he ranks second in league scoring with 33 points in 24 games. The Wolves are particularly interested in his gritty style and power-play expertise make him a promising offensive threat.
and Fillion, a 2005-born, 5’10” forward, posted 17 points last season for Rockland, and will return from injury to join the Wolves. He’s been described as a skilled playmaker who will help add depth and offensive versatility to Renfrew’s forward group.
As of time of reporting, the Nationals front office has yet to provide a statement on the trade.
