Renfrew Public Library is now the permanent home for a loving tribute to someone who, according to her family, was always authentically herself.
The library played host to a special dedication to Marion Ferguson on Friday, November 22nd, as the people closest to her shared stories, laughter, and a few tears over their memories of the long-time library patron.
Youngest child James explains that the library and its compassionate staff represented a safe space where his mother felt truly comfortable, even becoming the unofficial “grandma” for the kids taking in storytime in the children’s section.
Middle child Bob believes the library provided Marion with a means to connect with them through the many activities they enjoyed together while also giving her a social connection to the rest of the community that continued well into her life.
Marion’s children worked together with the library for a fitting memorial, tabbing Lanark’s Against The Grain Outdoors to reshape the Book Tree at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Raglan Street in her honour.
It’s hard to miss, with a large wooden squirrel carving inviting readers to the newly renamed “Marion’s Book Nook.” Oldest sibling Kelly says the monument is a reflection of a special connection Marion built with the wild animals who visited her backyard on the regular.
The Fergusons encourage other people in the community wishing to honour a loved one at the library or another public space to reach out to the town to learn about the options that are available.
