The Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) is launching a new immunization program this fall to protect infants and high-risk children from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. RSV is a significant cause of respiratory illness in infants and young children. While it usually results in mild symptoms, some cases can lead to severe infections that require hospitalization. The RSV season typically lasts from November to April.
This program is available for eligible infants and children who are Ontario residents. This includes those born in 2024 before the RSV season, those born during the upcoming RSV season, and children receiving medical care in Ontario during this time. Additionally, children up to 24 months of age who are vulnerable during their second RSV season are also eligible.
Immunization with Beyfortus® is the preferred method to protect infants from RSV. Pregnant individuals can also receive the RSV vaccine Abrysvo® to help safeguard their newborns. Generally, only one vaccine is needed for effective protection, and pregnant individuals should consult their healthcare provider before receiving Abrysvo®.
Dr. Jason Morgenstern, Medical Officer of Health at RCDHU, emphasized the importance of RSV immunization, stating that it is crucial for infants entering their first RSV season. This immunization helps protect them during the early weeks and months when they are most vulnerable to severe infections.
Parents can access the immunization through their healthcare providers, by appointment at RCDHU, or prior to leaving the hospital after giving birth.
