Cobden is home to a crop farming operation constantly looking to find what’s next for the Ottawa Valley’s agricultural scene.
Keanan Stone and husband Reuben not only tend to their own family farm on Ross Road but also lead the way in seed production and research, growing and an incredibly diverse mix of soy, hemp, and cereals, as well as a recently added blend of cover and forage crops that help keep soil healthy and farmable for local, national, and international clients.
The whole production is far different from your usual 3-crop rotation found along the Ottawa River. Keanan says that comes from Reuben’s goal to discover new practices from other farmers all over the world, studying everything from water conservation to managing soils and nutrients in the effort to make the local process more efficient and economical.
So, what sets the Ottawa Valley apart from other farming communities across the world? Keanan says the community is unlike anything either of them have seen elsewhere, picking each other up during rough times and especially during what has been a difficult year for a few local farmers.
