The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is warning the public about a species of caterpillar that people should not touch.
“The Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar is a venomous caterpillar that may be in Renfrew County and District,” reads an RCDHU alert. “It is white and fluffy, has black chain-like markings on its back and long black hairs that stick out near the front and back.”
Officials say contact with the caterpillar can cause reactions similar to poison ivy.
“Do not touch them!” reads the alert.
According to the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, symptoms can range from slight reddening of the skin to a burning sensation with swelling and pain. Some people may experience a headache, nausea or an allergic reaction
If you come in contact with a Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar, wash the affected area with soap and water as soon as possible. In the case of itching or swelling, apply calamine lotion and/or ice packs to the affected areas. Individuals who experience more generalized allergic reactions should seek medical advice from a healthcare professional.
