Renfrew County and District (RCD) is grappling with the opioid crisis, mirroring a broader trend across North America. In 2023, the region saw 69 opioid-related emergency department visits and 41 suspected drug poisoning deaths, both up from 2022. The drug poisoning death rate has tripled since 2018-2019.
In response, local nonprofits, public sector organizations, and people with lived experience are collaborating to develop the Renfrew County and District Drug Strategy (RCDDS). Led by Dr. Jason Morgenstern, Medical Officer of Health at the Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU), and Jama Watt, Strategic Implementation Lead for the Ottawa Valley Ontario Health Team, the strategy focuses on four pillars: prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and community safety. Working groups are being formed to address each pillar.
“The strategy unites various sectors to coordinate efforts and improve our response,” said Dr. Morgenstern. Jama Watt highlighted ongoing efforts by organizations such as Addiction Treatment Services, MacKay Manor, and The Grind to connect residents with treatment, as well as initiatives by RCDHU and local schools to raise awareness and prevent substance use.
The RCDDS aims to reduce drug-related harms, improve community safety, and lower healthcare and social service costs. Community consultations on the draft strategy are expected by early 2025.
Support services remain available, including the Renfrew County Addiction Treatment System and RCDHU’s harm reduction program, which offers safe supplies at multiple locations in the region.
