The government of Canada will start rejecting applications for low-wage temporary foreign workers in areas where the unemployment rate is six per cent or higher.
Employers will be allowed to hire a maximum of 10 per cent of their workforce from the temporary foreign worker program, down from 20 per cent.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it’s not fair to Canadians struggling to find a good job or to some of the temporary foreign workers in Canada who are being mistreated and exploited.
Canada had about one million job vacancies and a record-low unemployment rate of 4.9 per cent in 2022 when Ottawa eased restrictions for the temporary foreign worker program.
