An investigation into an incident at the Killaloe OPP station has concluded.
The Special Investigations Unit, Ontario’s police watchdog, has cleared Ontario Provincial Police of any wrongdoing in connection with the condition of a 36-year-old man who had been taken into police custody.
On March 4, the man suffered a medical crisis while in the custody of the Ontario Provincial Police at the OPP Killaloe Detachment. The SIU was notified of the incident and initiated an investigation. On his assessment of the evidence, Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s condition.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
The full report is available on the SIU website.
