Family, friends, fellow students and the greater community are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of a 15-year-old at the movie theatre in Renfrew Thursday night.
The teen, who was a Grade 9 student at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI), was in medical distress when emergency crews were called to the O’Brien Theatre just after 8 p.m. June 20. First responders attempted life-saving measures and the individual was transported to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
“As many of you know, in this small community, a tragic incident occurred last night at the theatre. Our staff is deeply saddened and our hearts go out to the family, friends and first responders affected by this tragedy. Out of respect, the Renfrew O’Brien Theatre will be closed Friday, June 21, 2024,” reads a post on the theatre’s Facebook page.
RCI officials reached out to families with the news, noting the death is a huge loss for the school community. Additional mental health and support staff were at the school today and will be available as long as needed.
The investigation into the death is continuing, however, it has been reported that tox screens have come back negative.
There is no suspicion of foul play, and the Office of the Chief Coroner has taken charge of the investigation.
