The Town of Renfrew and the club overseeing amateur wrestling across Renfrew County are forming a tag team in the quest for a massive opportunity.
Renfrew Town Council is putting their endorsement behind the Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club’s bid to host the 2025 Canada East Wrestling Festival at the myFM Centre next May.
Club President Curtis Haaima recently sent a written appeal to Mayor Tom Sidney, hoping to get the town’s support in bringing the event back to Renfrew County for the first time since 2011.
Hosting the annual event would be a natural fit for both the town and the RAWC, which operate three local teams and wrestling programs in Renfrew, Pembroke, and Petawawa. They also work with local school boards to share facilities, equipment, and expertise under a unique collaborative agreement.
Renfrew councillor Andrew Dick believes the opportunity is exactly what the town has been looking for.
If successful, the town would host wrestlers from as far as Thunder Bay and Prince Edward Island for the two-day competition.
