Renfrew Town Council will leave the viability of a new town park up to the opinion of community volunteers.
Council has appointed a working group to look into the potential for a wilderness trail along undevelopable lands along the Bonnechere River near Highway 17.
Manager of Environmental Services Amanda Springer laid out the plan for a very basic park concept, which was put together with the help of private groups that specialize in nature conservation and parkland development.
Springer says the four-person volunteer team has useful knowledge about the area and environmental policy, among other relevant issues.
Chief Administrative Officer Rob Tremblay adds that most, if not all, of the land that would be used for the park is already available.
Council would agree to move forward with forming the working group, although Councilor Andrew Dick would make one request to ensure the effort isn’t wasted.
The concept has become a divisive matter in the community, with some residents expressing concerns over spending in the wake of the Ma-te-Way Expansion.
Council would stress that, so far, the only thing spent on the project has been some of the town staff’s time.
Town staff have provided a brief summary of the four members of the new Bonnechere River Park and Trail Working Group:
Tauney Stinson – Tauney is a nature-advocate that is familiar with the proposed lands and hopes to see improvement to the lands as a result of this project. She is familiar with native ecosystems and plant species.
Terry Edwards – Terry is a retired school teacher who formerly lived within eyesight of the Bonnechere River for over 20 years. He believes that Renfrew has untapped potential for the development of the waterfront and during his time next to the River contemplated many ideas and possibilities for its use by residents and tourists.
Hayley Featherson – Hayley has a passion for environmental causes including being involved in environmental initiatives both in her personal and professional life. Additionally, Hayley has experience hosting several fundraising events for local and national charities.
Paddy Enright – Paddy is a PhD candidate (in an Environmental Field) that has significant experience in environmental policy, resource management, environmental research, environmental sector volunteering and outdoor based recreation.
