If you’re a book lover and can’t pass up a good deal, there’s an event in Renfrew this weekend that you should not miss.
Members of the Canadian Federation of University Women, Renfrew chapter, are getting set for this weekend’s annual giant used book sale, and it’s shaping up to be a great one.
Book committee co-chair Jane Donnelly says the sale has been going on for at least 40 years. There are more coming in all the time but she guesses that some 6-7,000 titles will fill the McNeil gymnasium at Renfrew Collegiate Institute when the doors open Friday night.
One of the things that hasn’t changed all that much over the years? The prices.
Plants and baked goods are also for sale at the event and, along with the always-popular children’s books, the selection runs the gamut.
“We have everything, we have fiction, non-fiction, craft books, hobby books, history, arts, science, fantasy, sci-fi, literature, humour, business, health and wellness, spirituality. You name it, we’ve got it,” said Donnelly.
Book sale proceeds allow CFUW-Renfrew to offer scholarships at local high schools.
Book club committee co-chair Tracey Stevens noted that often, when people find out where funds go, they make an additional donation.
Organizers are grateful for all who contribute to making the annual event a success, including the venue host, she said.
CFUW-Renfrew members are all volunteers who work shifts at the sale, she explained.
There are a couple of things for shoppers to keep in mind, said Stevens.
The book sale runs Friday, April 26 (4 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and Saturday, April 27 (9 a.m. to noon) at the MacNeil Gymnasium at Renfrew Collegiate Institute.
The sale is not the only exciting event taking place this weekend. Several events are planned around RCI’s Homecoming, including tours of the school that will take place during the sale.
