He didn’t have to wait too long, but Renfrew’s Kent Greer says it was definitely a relief to hear his name announced at the recent Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft.
Greer, a 5-foot-8 defenseman whose skating has drawn rave reviews from OHL scouts, describes the feeling of being selected early in the second round, 29th overall, by the North Bay Battalion.
It’s about as perfect a fit as Greer could hope for, as pre-draft talks with the Battalion’s front office left him with a good feeling ahead of this past weekend.
The two sides have talked about Greer’s role on the team since the draft, and there is a good chance he will be contributing to the team and helping to quarterback the powerplay unit as early as this upcoming season, depending on how training camp goes.
It might help Greer’s case that he’s modelling his style of play after one of the best in the business at the pro level.
As Kent gets ready to move onto the next stop in his journey to the big leagues, we asked him what advice he has for young hockey players in the Valley looking to walk that same path.
Greer was not the only Renfrew player selected by an OHL team over the weekend, as his longtime friend and Ottawa Valley Titans goaltender Kale Osipenko would be selected in the seventh round by the Sarnia Sting.
