Madawaska Valley’s newest fire captain is also making department history – she’s the first woman to hold the position in the municipality.
Monika Sawiak, an 11-year member of Madawaska Valley Fire Department’s South Hall, joined the fire service when she moved to the area from Oakville about 13 years ago.
Sawiak, who is originally from Poland and came to Canada as a teen, was looking for a way to get involved in the community and meet people.
“I joined the fire department thinking I’ll meet some people, do something good for the community and it actually always interested me,” she said.
What does she enjoy about being a firefighter?
“It’s just great to help people,” said Sawiak. “And the guys are great, they’re helping with everything, they taught me a lot and it’s stayed with me, it’s just like natural now.”
Sawiak, who works as a personal support worker at the Valley Manor in Barry’s Bay, has four sons and recently became a grandmother for the first time.
She’s pleased to be the first woman fire captain for the department.
“It’s a great honour and hard work pays off and I would encourage more girls, more women, to join,” said Sawiak.
Madawaska Valley Fire Chief Corwin Quade said firefighting is in Sawiak’s blood and he’s pleased to have her assume the position of captain.
“Monika is a very easy person to work with, always happy and an excellent work ethic,” said Quade.
He hopes the recent appointment inspires other women to join the department.
“Monika worked very hard and learned everything she had to get to the rank as Captain,” he said. “She is one of those firefighters that is first to arrive, and last to leave. Monika earned the position through her dedication and continued training over the years. She will do an excellent job and she will excel in the position.”
And Sawiak is not done with her accomplishments yet. This fall, she hopes to begin training to become a paramedic.
“Between home, work and the fire department and studying, I have little time off, but I like to keep myself busy,” she said.
