The responsibility for drinking water and wastewater services in Renfrew will change hands in the new year.
Town Council recently voted to enter into an agreement with the Ontario Clean Water Agency that will see the provincial Crown Agency take over those services starting on January 1st.
OCWA has already been managing Renfrew’s water and wastewater treatment plants for a number of years and has also overseen water services for several nearby municipalities, such as Petawawa.
In a statement, Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon says the move was made because the town wanted “to maintain the level of service, make sure our drinking water is safe, and continue to invest in our infrastructure,” while Mayor Tom Sidney adds that the town has “confidence that OCWA will deliver excellent service and thank staff for their continued contributions to our community as some transition to OCWA.”
The town will be working together with affected staff and OCWA during the transition, and there is not expected to be any disruption to service for residents while the switch is being made.
