The County of Renfrew has provided an update on forestry activities planned in 2023. Details were shared during the County of Renfrew Development and Property meeting on January 9th, 2023. Director of Development and Property Jason Davis says the County of Renfrew owns approximately 16,000 acres of forest on 53 different tracts of land, mostly acquired in the 1960’s through the Provincial Agreement Forest Program which funded 75% of the purchase price.
Davis says the County is Forest Stewardship Council Certified and managed under a long-term forest management plan. The Director of Development and Property says the County of Renfrew generates $180,000 in timber revenues per year.
Looking ahead for 2023, Davis says the County is finalizing a cell tower location on forestry property, reviewing implications of the Carbon Credit programs for forests and supporting the Algonquins of Ontario Land Claim.
Davis says the County will continue to provide outreach and education programs while playing a leadership role when dealing with provincial and federal issues such as invasive species and endangered species and their impact on the forest industry.
