Riverview Rescues is travelling 14-hours each way from Westmeath to Thunder Bay to pick up 51 dogs. Laura Pelkey, the Founder and President of Riverview Rescues, made the 2,600 kilometer round trip to give these dogs a chance at a better life. Pelkey says there is a crisis in Manitoba and Nunavut with thousands of stray animals on reserves.
The founder of Riverview Rescues says they are working with K9 Advocates Manitoba who help rural First Nation communities manage the overpopulation of stray dogs.
Pelkey says they rented a 15-foot trailer to comfortably transport the animals and have foster homes or adoptions lined up for the dogs they are bringing back.
Pelkey adds there will be a fundraiser at Hank & Hound in Pembroke on Saturday, December 10th that includes pet photos with Santa or the Grinch, a bake sale and microchipping. The founder of Riverview Rescues says there will also be some dogs that are available for adoption at the event, but not any of the animals on the current trip back from Thunder Bay as they decompress after the long journey.
The most up to date information and details on pets that are available for adoption can be found on the Riverview Rescue Facebook page.
You can make a donation to help cover any vet bills and provide care for the animals online through PayPal,Ā GoFundMe, or by email at riverviewrescues@gmail.com.
