Tom Sidney believes it time for Renfrew to find it’s identity.
The Renfrew-born Sidney, who recently retired after 25 years in the mental health field, is currently running for Mayor in the upcoming municipal election after spending two terms on Town Council.
While things like infrastructure and roads are always going to be an important aspect to any council term, Sidney that it’s important for the town to develop a brand for itself in order to attract both tourists and people looking to move.
Sidney also believes that Renfrew could be Festival Capital for Renfrew County, pointing to October 1st’s Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival as the type of success that Renfrew can build on through a dedicated committee that would oversee the events.
He also believes that it’s the ideal time to get new and old residents alike interested in town affairs. Better communication from the Town on what’s happening and being more responsive to questions and critique are key points that Sidney wishes to address should he be election.
Sidney also says it’s time to use better use the town’s online presence to keep people informed about what’s going on locally.
Another hot topic issue in this year’s election is affordable housing. Sidney says there’s plenty of space to build in Renfrew, but the town needs to have a conversation with developers to show them the benefits of building units with affordability in mind.
He adds that the current housing shortage is starting affecting not just low income families but the middle class as well.
Tom Sidney is one of five people running for Mayor, alongside Mike Coulas, Sandi Heins, Kate Windle, and Callum Scott.
Renfrew goes to the polls on October 24th.
