Food insecurity is a rising problem both locally and across the province, and the need for a well stocked and staffed community food banks has become more apparent than ever.
Vera Mayor never saw a food bank during her youth in the Pontiac region, so she jumped on the chance to take part when she moved back later in her life and noticed one had been created while she was gone.
The Pontiac Food Bank, located in Campbell’s Bay, Quebec, not only addresses the need to supply those in need with food and ingredients but also give them the opportunity to learn recipes using those ingredients, as well as a place to socialize and feel at home, according the Vera.
The Food Bank also takes the necessary steps to ensure people who might not be comfortable about revealing their need to use their services are looked after, including inviting them to visit low-traffic hours.
The Pontiac Food Bank joined 96.1 myFM as part of this year’s All-Hands-On-Deck Food Drive, and Vera says the support they received was outstanding. It’s not a surprise to her, as she regularly has people offer support to the food bank while she’s out in the community.
