“Sue, I think you should join us!”
Those were words that Sue White’s friend, a volunteer member of the Support Committee for our local Air Cadet squadron, told her almost 13 years ago. Since then, Sue has not only taken her friend up on that offer but she has become the Chairperson of the Support Committee.
The Air Cadets is an all-inclusive program that offers a young people aged 12 to 18 in our community the chance to learn skills, confidence, and leadership with a focus on aviation. Sue says the support committee volunteers are there to support the cadets and their officers as they go through the program.
She notes that getting to watch the growth of the cadets as people from the start to finish within the program and seeing what they accomplish is amazing, and that the Air Cadets program offers them career paths in aviation.
She notes that the Air Cadets are not a military recruitment program, but the path to join the military is there and cadets are welcome to discuss that if they are interested.
The Air Cadets meet at the Renfrew RCAF wing at 164 Argyle St South every Tuesday, where you can learn more on how to volunteer your time with them as well. Social distancing and masking are still being enforced as part of the program.
