Former chief of the defence staff Jonathan Vance has been sentenced to 80 hours of community service after pleading guilty to one charge of obstruction of justice. The judge also ordered the retired Canadian Armed Forces commander to be put on probation for 12 months and to refrain from contacting Major Kellie Brennan. Vance was accused of repeatedly contacting a woman and trying to convince her to make false statements to military investigators about their past relationship. Vance failed to disclose that he and Brennan had a long-standing intimate relationship. He also tried to discourage her from revealing it because it exposed him to the possibility of a charge under the National Defence Act. He was not charged with any inappropriate sexual misconduct.
