Maple syrup is flowing in the Ottawa Valley.
The annual Maple Weekend event is coming up at Mapleside Sugarbush outside of Pembroke.
Owner and operator at Mapleside Sugarbush Ray Bonenberg says maple syrup season usually takes place in March and April depending on the weather.
He says this year it took longer for the trees to thaw out after the cold winter.
Bonenberg says for those making maple syrup at home, there’s equipment you can get that doesn’t damage the trees as much.
He says it’s important to get a thermometer to ensure the sap comes off at the proper temperature, 219 or 220 Fahrenheit.
Maple Weekend is Saturday and Sunday (April 2nd and 3rd, 2022) from 10:00am to 4:00pm and gives you an opportunity to tour a sugar bush, taste taffy on snow and see how maple syrup is made.
There’s no cost to attend the event at Mapleside Sugarbush, located at 166 Reiche Road in Rankin just off Highway 41.
