Sad to say, fire hydrants are not always the first items to be cleared following a big dump of snow the likes of which occurred on Monday.
Arnprior Fire Chief Rick Desarmia says members of the public are welcome to assist with clean-up efforts.
Desarmia says look for the yellow pole marker that stands out in drifts and snow banks to mark the hydrant’s location.
He says never pile additional snow on a hydrant, and don’t damage the marker poles that show where hydrants are located.
The Arnprior Fire Chief also cautions that residents should clear snow that may be blocking appliance exhaust vents around your home, as this can lead to carbon monoxide build up.
If you have elderly neighbours, lend them a hand with this task.
As well, maintaining working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide sensors is always recommended.
