The Pembroke Boxing Club is home to provincial champion and local fighter Andrew Burgoyne.
Andrew started boxing about 4-years-ago and is now recognized as a three time provincial champion.
His coach and father, Jason Burgoyne, who owns the Pembroke Boxing Club, says Andrew will be taking part in a club show in New Brunswick this weekend (Saturday, August 14th, 2021).
This will be the first competition for the local boxer in roughly a year and a half due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Andrew says he’s been looking forward to this event for about 2-years now and adds the last time they were at this venue he went up against Team Ireland in an international fight.
Training during the pandemic was difficult for the local boxer.
Luckily one of the assistant coaches, who was living alone, was able to combine households with the Burgoyne family to provide a training partner for Andrew.
Despite gyms and indoor facilities being closed during the lockdown, Andrew was still able to train three times a day, five days a week.
Already an accomplished boxer, the 17-year-old from Pembroke has trained with professionals in Toronto and fought the national champion in Quebec.
Andrew hopes to get onto the national team, get recognized with some international fights and compete at the world championships, Olympics and professional level.
His father and coach Jason says he watches a lot of pro boxing, but nobody is more entertaining than his own son.
Jason says competition is what a coach lives for, adding Andrew is his favourite boxer to watch.
With COVID-19 restrictions starting to lift in Ontario, Jason says the Pembroke Boxing Club is closing in on back to normal operations.
While there are capacity limits, contact tracing, screening and other COVID-19 safety requirements in place, the Pembroke Boxing Club is open again.
The owner of the club wants the community to know that Pembroke has boxing champions who represent the area when they compete.
Burgoyne also hopes to bring back live boxing to the Ottawa Valley with a Rumble 3 event in the works.
