17-year-old Ruby Pilatzke is getting ready for her 100-kilometer walk between Arnprior and her home town of Petawawa.
She will be starting at the Antrim Truck Stop in Arnprior at 2:00pm on Friday (August 6th, 2021).
Ruby will walk through Arnprior down Daniel Street, Elgin Street and Madawaska Street, to River Road, turn onto Storyland Road, take Queens Line, Foresters Falls Road, Beachburg Road, to Pembroke Street and onto Petawawa Boulevard before making it to the Civic Centre in Petawawa.
Businesses and people along the route are encouraged to show support with signs, blue balloons or blue circles.
Right next to the Civic Centre in Petawawa (16 Civic Centre Road) the container market is going on and McGuire’s Donuts is doing something special for the cause.
There will be a booth where you can ask about the blue balloon challenge and silent auction
Ruby is walking a step closer to a cure and raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Ruby was diagnosed with type one diabetes (T1D) 8 years ago.
There isn’t a cure for T1D, and it is not preventable.
Why 100km?
This year marks the 100th anniversary since the discovery of insulin – which is necessary to keep Ruby alive each day.
During Ruby’s 100km stretch, she is hoping people will donate to JDRF’s mission to find a cure.
She had a goal of raising $10,000 for this walk but has raised $15,000 and counting.
Ruby has also won numerous prestigious awards this year – Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, Diabetes Hope Scholarship, and the Sir Frederick Banting Legacy Foundation Education Award.
