Joy Pilgrim is working as a virtual teacher at Queen Elizabeth Public School in Renfrew.
Pilgrim says teaching is actually the second part of her career as she went back to teachers college in her late 30’s. Pilgrim says she always knew she wanted to be a teacher and before going back to school owned a flower shop in downtown Renfrew.
She says her favourite part of teaching is working with youth and the relationships that she has built with students and families. Pilgrim says knowing you made a difference in a kids life is about as good of an accomplishment as you can get.
Working as a teacher, Pilgrim says she’s never bored as there’s always something to learn and do. She says some of the more difficult parts of the job are working with kids who are struggling and dealing with mental health issues. Pilgrim says it can wear you down and be sad, tiring and exhausting trying to help someone who’s really having a hard time.
At the start of the school year, Pilgrim was assigned to 100% virtual learning. She says it was a huge adjustment and has made her realize that good teaching is about the relationship and trust level you’re able to build with your students. She says instead of always worrying about having the “cool” interactive slides, instead she turns the camera and microphone on and reads books, discusses litterature or puts up a map to view. Pilgrim says while there has been some big advancements in online learning, she adds it will never be as good as being in the classroom.
Pilgrim says online teaching is harder than in-person teaching because it requires more time and planning. She adds the virtual learning is also hard on kids so she tries to incorporate physical education, movements and even an outdoor scavenger hunt to keep everyone engaged. Pilgrim also says sometimes she will turn her microphone and camera off to let the kids have some free chats, like they would at recess time so they don’t feel lonely or disconnected.
In terms of a favourite grade, Pilgrim says she loves them all, but adds she’s been teaching Grade 6 for a while. She says they’re learning about the world, changing so much and it’s fascinating to be a part of.
The Renfrew teacher says you should only get into this career if you care about the kids and their success. Pilgrim says it’s important to be optimistic, believe that kids can be successful and maintain positive vibes.
