Renfrew Council has taken a series of steps meet the challenge of addressing overt and systemic racism in the Town.
The initial moves Tuesday (December 15th) address issues raised, and backlash from, a CBC expose on Racism in the Valley presented on the public broadcaster the previous week.
That’s Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon, who presented a new by-law intended to replace existing municipal policies, shared a list of resources for community education, arranged a schedule of virtual meeting participation including presentations from the municipality of Westport and various municipal associations, and a liaison with the City of Pembroke.
Councillor Tom Sidney then proposed the formation of an Ad-Hoc Committee that will consist of two members of Council and three members of marginalized groups in Town that will make its recommendations to the Renfrew Human Resources Committee and report back to Council in April of 2021.
