The Town of Renfrew is moving forward with electronic welcome signs at four locations.
Council voted to move forward with the project as part of the September 8th meeting at a cost of $338,377.63 with annual operating costs of $8,000 ($2,000 per sign).
The four locations identified include Lisgar Avenue, Bruce Street, Stewart Street and at the Visitors Information Centre.
The Town of Renfrew will use the modernization funding received from the province to pay for the project.
Delivery of the new signs would be within 10 to 12 weeks of the acceptance date.
The decision to move forward with the electronic signs was not unanimous by council.
Councillors Emon and Heins supported the project saying the new signs will be able to provide important messaging and information to local residents.
Mayor Don Eady opposed the project saying that’s an awful lot of money to spend on that sort of project. While the mayor sees the benefits of having new welcome signs he’s concerned about upcoming funding the town may be receiving.
In a recorded vote councillors Peter Emon, Mike Coulas, Andrew Evans, Sandi Heins and Arlene Jamieson were in favour.
Mayor Don Eady voted against the project and councillor Tom Sydney was not present for the vote.
